Many years pass before areas of surface mining are turned into lakes and are ready for alternative use. Even if enough water can be taken from rivers to flood the residual mining-holes, maintenance measures are necessary for a long time even after the final water level is reached. Only then will there be safe and biologically acceptable bodies of water.
